Your Punch List!

The Winter is dragging on and I am Finding it very difficult to stay in shape. Most of my workouts are indoors which is much less inspiring than the alternative. However, I have found a way to punch up my (your) workout and get myself (you) fit for the Spring/Summer!

Moov

I know I posted this already, but if you haven’t seen it or purchased it yet, now is your time to buy Moov. Today, I am focused on the boxing application that you can use with Moov. It provides an amazing workout that will get your heart rate up, make you sweat profusely, and may even teach you how to fight (don’t be a wuss)!

You need to buy two devices, one for each wrist to use the boxing application. Then you stand 3.5′ from your device, rhythmically dance to the music (if you can, I can’t), and bob and weave as desired. The app brings you through a series of punch combinations including jabs, crosses, hooks and uppercuts while keeping track of your success. The app is addicting and the levels of difficulty keep progressing so you will never get bored of the workout.

Everlast Boxing Gloves

Working out with boxing gloves not only makes for a better workout, but also is much cooler. Who wants to be shadow boxing when you can have on gloves and look like you know what you are doing.

My research says 12 oz. gloves for most women and 14 oz. for most men. Competitive boxers use lighter gloves. No need for headgear yet!

Smartrope

This entire post was leading up to this next item, possibly my favorite new Find. Everyone knows that boxing goes with jumping rope just like peanut butter goes with jelly. The Smartrope not only keeps track of the number of jumps you take, it has an embedded LED light that shows you that number as you jump! How cool is that???!!! It is a great rope, weighted just right, and has a ton of technology in it. Friends and strangers will be jealous!

Shadowbox NY
28 W 20th St, New York, NY 10011

Beat your friends to the punch now that you have your own boxing gloves and head down to the Flatiron District to attend a boxing class at Shadowbox NY. With 40 heavy bags in a dimly lit room resembling a futuristic Soul Cycle, this is clearly the next rage in the workout space. The music is jamming and the instructors are personalities (with enviable bodies) and serious boxing skills. Just like spinning, you get out what you put in, and you can follow at your own pace. They even offer private lessons in their vintage style boxing ring. Also of note, they have great branded athletic apparel and a healthy ringside cafe in the front of house.

Now that you have had a thorough and exhausting boxing workout, whether at Shadowbox or your own gym, you need to recover fast. That is where cryotherapy comes in. This relatively new therapy has shown the ability to reduce inflammation in the tissues, muscles and joints while also improving the look & feel of your skin. You basically change into a robe, mittens, and booties (all provided there) and step into a chamber that looks like an upright tanning bed. You step into the machine for 2-3 minutes while the machine cools to 220 degrees Fahrenheit; surprisingly it is not uncomfortable and when you finally emerge you feel great. This compares very favorably to recovering in an ice bath for 30 minutes!
